Math for El. Ed. 1, MAT201M, Pre-test Policy

(6/2/2014)

Prospective elementary educators will come to Bethel with a variety of abilities in mathematics. In our efforts to facilitate student success in the Math for Elementary Education sequence, Bethel has a process for identifying strengths and weaknesses in each student’s mathematics background. Many students will come adequately prepared for success in our courses. Some, however, may need additional support and review of foundational skills necessary to succeed in the Bethel mathematics courses, prepare for licensure examinations, and confidently progress toward a career in teaching. The identification and review process is summarized graphically and is also detailed in the paragraphs to follow.

Course Prerequisites

Before registering for MAT201M (Mathematics for Elementary Education 1), a student must demonstrate sufficient skills in basic mathematics. These skills are generally at the middle-school level and are essential for successful completion of the course. There are two ways students can satisfy this requirement:

  • A score of at least 23 on the Math portion of the ACT or 519 on the Math portion of the SAT.
  • Passing Bethel's MAT201M Pre-Test with a minimum score of 80%.

In other words, a student not meeting the ACT/SAT requirement must pass the MAT201M Pre-Test before registering for the course.

Timing of Course Enrollment

  • Freshmen with a sufficient ACT/SAT score or who pass the pretest in Welcome Week are encouraged to enroll in MAT201M during the spring of their freshman year.
  • Students with less than 15 semester credits will not be admitted to the course unless they have a sufficient ACT/SAT score and are pursuing a middle level endorsement license for teachers of mathematics.

Pretest Information

Review and Remediation

  • Students who do not achieve the required 80% passing rate on the Bethel pretest must complete and pass Bethel’s ALEKS Math for Elementary Education Prep course. To enroll in this course, please see the ALEKS enrollment instructions.
  • To "pass" and complete the ALEKS course, students must master every course goal at the 90% level. Upon successful completion of the ALEKS course, students will qualify to take the Math for El. Ed. 1 Pretest again. To receive clearance to re-take the pretest, students should email Dr. Brown. This email must be sent at least one work day before you plan to retake the pretest, in order to ensure the ability to take the pretest.
  • Students who are unable to pass the pretest after successfully completing the ALEKS course should schedule a meeting with the Education Department Chair to determine the "next step" in his or her degree program.
