Bethel Math Testing Information

Do I need a math test?

Math testing requirements exist for only three Bethel math courses: Precalculus, Calculus 1, and Math for El. Ed. 1. Testing is required to make sure students enroll in the right course and are prepared for these courses. Your academic advisor, instructor, and advisors available at New Student Welcomes, Welcome Week, and registration times can also help you in your course decision.

Students planning to take Precalculus (MAT123M) or Calculus 1 (MAT124M) must take a math placement exam to enroll or maintain enrollment (if pre-registered) in the course. Complete policies for Precalculus/Calculus Placement.
Students planning to be elementary education majors and who take Math for El. Ed. 1 (MAT201M) must have completed one of these options:
- scored 23 or higher on the math portion of the ACT,
- scored 519 or higher on the math portion of the SAT score, or
- scored at or above the 80% level on the Math for El.Ed. Pretest

MAT201M is usually not taken your first semester at Bethel. Complete policies for Math for El. Ed. 1 Pretests.

There are no placement test requirements for Calculus 2. Transfer credit for Calculus 1, or the appropriate AP exam score are the required prerequisites for Calculus 2. This AP scores document explains how AP scores relate to Bethel math courses.

When is math testing offered?

Math testing is offered during New Student Welcomes, Welcome Week, on the second day of classes, and at registration times. Here is the current schedule. No registration is necessary for the placement exam or pretest.

How do I prepare?

Objectives and review material are available for each test.

After I take the exam, where do I get my results?

You will be given results on paper as you leave the exam. Your test scores also go into Banner, to your advisor, and to math instructors.
